The base unit for a lift trolley, of conventional, or of variable geometry, is adjustable for height, in that it can be extended or retracted. It consists of an assembly of lower cross beams (4, 5), which are mounted so as to slide on the vertical masts (2) of the lift trolley. An upper cross beam (11) is also mounted so as to slide freely along the length of masts. The lower cross beams are rigidly fixed at their centres to a vertical support (8), within which slides freely, a vertical rod (9). The vertical rod is fixed at its upper extremity with a grip (10). to automatically grip and release the masts. The rod is fitted so as to be solid with the upper cross beam right up to the base of the grip.
