Metal bars are reduced in dia. by passing them underneath a reciprocating hammer or between a set of radially arranged hammers. The end of the bar is gripped by a clamping head (1) with two hinged arms (3). The arms are opened or closed by a coned head (5) which forms a piston and is actuated by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure in the cylinders (8, 9). The shocks due to forging are transmitted to the stop (6) and cone and are then absorbed by the compressed air in the cylinders or, if oilk is used, by the resilience of the supply pipes.
|
