The invention is directed to a label printing and applying apparatus, although the invention is also useful in apparatus which only involves printing. According to the invention, the print head is driven form a position spaced apart from a record such as a label and a supporting platen to a position in printing cooperation with the platen to make a printing impression on the record. As the print head starts to rebound, the rebound is dampened so that the print head cannot make a second impression on the record which may be out of registry with the first impression. The rebound dampening means comprises one or more weights carried by the print head which can move relative to the print head.
