The present invention comprises the use of antibodies specific for cholesterol as an oral food supplement for the purpose of lowering serum cholesterol levels, particularly low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The present invention reduces the serum cholesterol levels of the individuals eating said antibodies and retards or reduces the severity of atherosclerosis or atherosclerosis plaques caused by ingestion of dietary cholesterol or by other factors. The antibodies specific for cholesterol can be obtained either by active immunization of the animal that comprises the food source; purified antibodies or serum containing antibodies to cholesterol that occur naturally in the serum of pigs, cows, or other animals used as food; antibodies purified from human serum or plasma that contains naturally-occurring antibodies to cholesterol; antibodies to cholesterol that are created by artificial means such as monoclonal antibodies to cholesterol or other anti-cholesterol that are created by artificial means such as monoclonal antibodies to cholesterol or other anti-cholesterol antibody constructs; or organisms such as bacteria that are secreting antibodies to cholesterol.
