The seat comprises a back rest (11) mounted, for a practically vertical movement with respect to a base part (1), by means of a spring suspension (2, 3, 17). A seat bottom (10) may be moved in conjunction with the back rest but is also supported so as to tilt with respect to this back rest when it is raised and lowered. This tilting takes place about two transverse horizontal axes (I7.2, I7.3) allowing the ankles of the occupant of the seat to remain stationary whilst his knees pivot about an axis (A) passing through the ankles. <IMAGE>
