The press has a reciprocating ram and pivoting head. The pivot axis (7) of the packing head (5) is to the side of the ram rod (3). Movement of ram (1) and head can be so coordinated that the free entrance to the baling chamber for the crop is of constant dimensions at any position of the head. They can be coupled together by a linkage and/or hydraulic rams. The compression stroke of the ram can end each time beyond the chamber entrance.
