A magnetic recording and reproducing device able to reproduce sound and characters/pictures recorded on a magnetic tape comprises an audio cassette recorder 1, a magnetic tape on which are recorded digital signals which comprise frequency-modulated control information for the cassette recorder and predetermined character/ picture information and predetermined sound signals related to the character/ picture information, a processor 5 including a memory for controlling the cassette recorder 1 according to the control information and for operating a TV set 6 to display the character/picture information, a digital signal modulator/ demodulator 4 for converting parallel digital signals from the processor into serial frequency-modulated digital signals and vice versa, and a sound microphone.
