When cutting sheets of paper or cardboard for use in packaging machine it is important that there is no cumulative error in the line of cut in order to ensure the correct subsequent folding of the sheets. To achieve this result the cutting machine feeds the stack of sheets (11) to the blade (11) by a screw driven slide (7). An indicator (4) on the slide (7) passes over a notched scale (2) and generates pulses in a control element. These pulses are transmitted to a computer (6) which compares their number generated between successive cuts with the required number and adjusts the control mechanism accordingly.
