The composition for the prevention and treatment of cancer comprises the extract of Pterocarpus santalinus as an effective ingredient, wherein the cancer is liver cancer, thyroid cancer, ovarian cancer, gall bladder cancer, large intestine cancer, leukemia, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, uterine cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer or laryngeal cancer; the Pterocarpus santalinus extract is prepared with a solvent selected from water and lower alcohol such as methanol and ethanol; the amount of the Pterocarpus santalinus extract is 0.02-50 wt.% based on the total weight of the composition; the composition is a pharmaceutical or health food composition; and the health food composition is formulated as powder, granule, tablet, capsule or drink.
