Electrochemical generator having a positive electrode, the collector for which is graphite, and contg. when charged or on insertion into the generator a metal halide MXq, the active material for which is a halogen, also contains a metal negative electrode and an electrolyte which is solid at ambient temp. and liq. at its working temp. The solid electrolyte contains a mixt. of Al halide and >=1 alkali metal halide together with sufficient MXq to saturate it. The negative electrode is either Al when the amt. of MXq is practically nil, or when the redox potential of the Al is less than that of M w.r.t. the halogen in the electrolyte, is of the metal M in the contrary case. M may be In, Fe, Zr, U or Al and q is 1-6. X may be Cl or Br. Pref. >=1 electrode contains a consolidatory agent, esp. PTFE. Improved stability of the reacting components is obtd.
