Epoxides of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 denotes hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or aryl, and R2 denotes alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, aralkenyl or aryl, it being possible for the alkenyl radicals to be terminally linked to a cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or aryl radical, and R1 and R2 denote aralkenyl or aryl and R1 and R2 can be cyclised to give a cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl radical which, in turn, can be fused to one or more cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl radicals, are obtained in high yields by a novel process which is easy to carry out and technically economical. These epoxides can be used as precursors in the preparation of odoriferous substances or of carotenoid compounds, vitamin A or steroids. They can be obtained by reacting carbonyl compounds R1-CO-R2 with dimethylsulphonium methylide in the presence of an inert, apolar, aprotic solvent.
