In the recovery of chlorine from iron chloride(s) formed as by-product in the chlorination of titanium iron materials contg. >5 wt.% iron oxide, (a) the FeCl3 formed as by-prod. and/or the FeCl3 formed as prod. in the oxidn. stage (b) is first subjected to partial dechlorination in the presence of >=1 reducing agent. In a second stage (b), the resulting FeCl2 and/or FeCl3 from the chlorination reaction are subjected to oxidn. in the presence of O2 or O2-contg. gas at 300-1200 degrees C. to form FeCl3 and Fe2O3. In a third stage (c), the FeCl3 formed in stage (b) is recycled to stage (a). Process is esp. useful for recovery of chlorine which becomes bound as iron chlorides during the extraction of Ti from Fe2O3-contg. Ti materials such as ilmenite.
