A combustion chamber(5) is coupled in parallel with the diesel engine(10) between the compressor(3) and its exhaust gas driven turbine(2). The combustion chamber output is also connectable(17) to the engine inlet manifold to warm the engine cylinders and allow starting in subzero ambient temps. The turbocharging system includes at an intercooler(13) and controllable valves(9, 16). The combustion chamber inlet (from the compressor outlet) and in the line from the combustion chamber to engine inlet. A further controllable valve(18) may be provided to interconnect the compressor and intercooler.
