The opening in a fire wall through which a conveyor passes is sealed by a sliding fire door. the part of the conveyor which lies in the path of the fire door is detachable and is mounted on a lever arm which enables the detachable element to be swung away from the opening when the fire door is closed. The fire door and the element lever arm are mechanically linked together so that a movement of the fire door causes the rotating movement of the conveying element lever. The fire door consequently operates the lever so that the reliable removal of the conveying element is guaranteed. If the fire door is mounted vertically above its closed position, the downward movement of the fire door can be used to drive the conveyor element lever. The device guarantees a fire proof seal of an opening in a fire wall through which a conveyor passes whilst ensuring that the displaced conveyor element is accurately returned to its operating position when the fire door is opened.
