Simultaneously desizing, scouring and bleaching of a cotton-containing textile material may be carried out in a single step by treating the material with an aqueous solution containing an alkali-metal chlorite, preferably sodium chlorite, and a cationic surface-active agent. This operation may be carried out in conjunction with either a batch or continuous dipping process or with a steaming process. In a high pressure steamer preferably the aqueous solution contains from 1 to 2% of sodium chlorite and from 0.5% to 2% of cationic surface- active agent, and the material is treated for from 0.5 to 2 minutes at a temperature of from 120 DEG to 145 DEG C. A high pressure steamer for use in this latter process is provided with titanium guide rolls at least where these rolls will contact the corrosive alkali-metal chlorite.
