Prodn. of organic sulphones (I) comprises treating the corresp. sulphides (II) with an aq. peracid soln. Pref. the products are of formula R1-SO2-(CR2R3)n-CR4=NOZ. In the formula, n = 0-10; R is alkyl, phenyl, phenalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, all opt. substd. by >=1 Cl, F, Br, CN, NO2, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl or alkoxyalkyl; R2 and R3 are H or alkyl opt. substd. by >=1 Cl, F, Br, CN, NO2 or alkoxy; R4 is H, Cl, F, Br, CN, Alkyl, alkylsulphonyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl, carbalkoxyalkylsulphonyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, alkylsulphinylalkyl, or alkylsulphonylalkyl, all the alkyl fragments opt. substd. by >=1 Cl, Br, F, CN, amido or NO2; Z is H or CONR5R6; R5 and R6 are H, alkyl, phenyl or phenalkyl all opt. substd. by >=1 Cl, F, Br, NO2, CN, alkyl or alkoxy. Some (I) are insecticides, nematocides and miticides, but the process is generally applicable.
