An intake port and an intake valve seat of an internal combustion engine are arranged such that sufficient swirl turbulence of the air-fuel mixture inducted through the intake port is produced in the combustion chamber. This turburence improves the combustion carried out in the combustion chamber even through the combustion chamber is supplied with a considerably large amount of recirculated exhaust gases.
