Appts. for gaseous treatment of a cellulosic material comprises a tubular chamber with a perforated or porous plate sloping downwards at 1 degrees-40 degrees from an input shaft (A) at one end of the chamber to an outlet shaft at the opposite end. The gaseous reagent is admitted beneath the plate into each of a series of compartments along the chamber. The gas injection rate is adjusted to cause the material to float down through the chamber at a controlled rate. Appts. is suitable for bleaching, baking or drying a suspension of cellulosic fibres, more readily adaptable than vertical silos to suit a wide range of suspension concentrations, e.g. 2-32%. The plate may be od drilled or porous metallic or ceramic sheet if drilled, the outlets of the openings are pref. bevelled to minimise disruption of the passing fibres. Typically, perforations are of 0.5-2.5 mm dia. and the combined orifice area is 15-75% of the plate area. The chamber includes detectors to monitor the level of material in the chamber.
