A photodetector triggered alarm is intended to provide a warning when horses in stalls are subjected to attacks of colic. Such attacks result in repeated lying down and getting up again. Light sources are located in one wall of the stall at a suitable height direction onto reflectors. The required signals are transmitted to a counter that provides an output when a specific number has been generated within a specified period. An alarm stage is energised to trigger an alarm.
