Stable dispersions are made by polymerisation of a water-in-oil emulsion of an aq. soln. of acrylamide, opt. contg. other water-soluble monomers, in non-polar organic solvent, in presence of a water-in-oil emulsifier and polymerisation initiator, with addn. of a water- and/or oil-soluble heavy metal salt as accelerator. Used as retention agents and de-watering accelerators in paper-making, as flocculating agents, sedimentation aids or flotation aids in effluent water treatment. The accelerators allow polymerisation to be initiated and carried out at lower temps., so that the exothermic reaction heat can be controlled by cooling and more uniform prods. obtd.
