A process for gasifying coal (or a coal-derived product) to produce a fuel gas comprises the steps in which an alkaline earth metal is ion-exchanged onto the coal by contact with a solution of an alkaline earth metal compound, the resulting ion-exchanged coal is separated from the solution and then mixed with an alkali metal compound, and the resulting composition is gasified to produce a fuel gas. When the coal has insufficient ion-exchange sites (e.g. in the case of a high rank coal), the number of ion-exchange sites is increased either by (1) contacting, heating and soaking the coal in an alkaline solution of an alkali metal compound (preferably a solution comprising alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide and an alkali metal compound) or (2) oxidation with an oxidizing agent such as air, peroxygen compound, or oxidizing acid. The gasification rate of the compositions used is faster than that of physical mixtures of coal, alkaline earth and alkali metal compounds. |
