The invention concerns the hot repairing of refractory linings of furnaces and the like. Difficulty has been experienced with repair compositions employed heretofore in obtaining both the required immediate adhesion of the composition to the damaged lining and adequate refractoriness of the completed repair. The invention is directed to avoiding this disadvantage by a method which involves applying two layers of refractory material to the damaged lining, in which an easily adhering refractory composition with a high proportion of fine particles and a high binding agent content is applied to the lining to be repaired as the first layer and then a sinterable, wear-resistant, refractory composition is applied as the second layer. The first layer adheres better than prior repair compositions and effects some cooling of the repair site, and the second layer adheres to the first better than it would to the untreated repair site. Conventional hot repair refractory materials can be employed as the basic refractory material for both layers. The first layer is preferably a refractory rich influxing agent, e.g. sinter magnesia rich in iron, and the second layer preferably employs a refractory of greater heat and wear resistance, e.g. magnesia low in iron. |
