PREPARATION OF HALOGEN SUBSTITUTEDDDBUTYROLACTONE

PURPOSE:To obtain the title substance useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of amino acids in high yield, by reacting an alpha-olefin with a polyhalogeno-acetic acid in the presence of a ruthenium or rhodium complex having a trivalent organophosphorus compound as a ligand. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-olefin of formula I: (R is H or alkyl group) is reacted with a polyhalogeno-acetic acid of formula II: (X is H or halogen; Y is halogen) in the presence of 0.05-10 mol % based on the raw material mixture of a ruthenium or a rhodium complex having a trialent organophosphorus compound of formul a IV or V as a catalyst at a reflux temperature under normal pressrne for 1-7 hr to give an alpha-halogen substituted-gamma-butyrolactone of formula III. Dichlorotris (triphenyl phosphine)-ruthenium, etc. may be cited as the catalyst. EFFECT:The objective compound can be obtained in one step under mild conditions without substantial formation of by-products.
