Amides were mamfd. by the hydration of nitriles in the presence of metallic copper catalysts obtained by reducing a Cu compd. in an aq. medium in the presence of alkali and optionally a transition metal compd. Thus, 25g CuCl2 in 150 ml H2O was treated with 5g H2SO4 and 16g Na3PO2 in 50 ml H2O and the pptd. metallic Cu sepd., washed, and dried. a mixt. of lg Cu catalyst and 10ml 6.5% acrylronitrile soln. was heated 30 min at 100≦̸C, giving 90% conversion to acrylamide.
