Formaldehyde was produced by the oxidation of MeOH in a carbon steel reactor. The internal surface of the carbon steel reactor was pretreated to prevent production of formic acid prior to oxidation of MeOH to HCHO with a passivating amount of a member selected from the group consisting of (a) a mixt. of oxygen and SO2 and (b) H2S, or pretreated with H2S in the absence of oxygen on an oxidized carbon steel surface.
