The stage selector, for a staged transformer, has the even-numbered and odd-numbered fixed contacts (1-20) per phase located in corresponding different planes (a1, a2, b1, b2) and in concentric circles. The two contact rings (29, 30) associated with the odd contacts and the two contact rings (31, 32) associated with the even contacts are connected together electrically. The two contact bridges (36, 37) for the odd contacts are connected together rigidly and are displaced w.r.t. one another in exactly the same way as the two contact bridges (38, 39) for the even contacts. Only one bridge of each pair contacts a fixed contact at any time.
