A textured decorative laminate is produced by heat and pressure consolidating a support base, a decorative cellulose sheet impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin and a peened metal press plate having a texture over the entire surface facing the sheet. The textured surface has a roughness of 30-200 micro-inches, a Gardner Gloss meter 60 degrees gloss of 20-100 and comprises a myriad of craters of radii of curvature 0.003-0.050 inch. The texture is provided by peening with large and then smaller shot or with shot then grit blasting. The laminate has a textured surface obscuring defects in the substrate while not spoiling the colour of the decoration. The laminate is free from the greyness imparted by etched or sand blasted plates or plates covered with aluminium foil and from the mottling caused by plates covered with glossine paper.
|
