Prodn. of stable, colourless isophorone (I) comprises first distilling the crude synthesis mixt. to remove NaOH, acetone and most of the water, then treating with a strongly acid ion-exchanger resin in acid form (opt. using a dried resin). The effluent from this treatment is neutralized with alkali, buffered and washed with water by decantation before distilling under reduced pressure. Pref. a crude synthesis mixt. which has been dried and from which heavy and light ends have been removed is used; it contains 1%, esp. 0.3% water. The obtd. colourless prod. of low acidity is stable during prolonged storage.
