Sterilising beverage bottles - by spraying upturned bottles with sulphurous acid soln. which is filtered and recirculated, and drying with hot air

Beverage bottles are sterilised using the method of dipping in an aq. soln. of sulphur dioxide by removing the residue of the soln. with the aid of compressed sterile air. The amt. of water used is reduced and pollution with acidic water of environment is prevented. Pref. the blowing with compressed air which is preheated to approx. 35 degrees C is effected with the bottles in their upturned position. In partic. it is pref. to use a filtered sulphurous acid soln. which is sprayed with the aid of a nozzle passed into the bottles, recirculating the soln. and filtering it, and, drying the sterilised bottles interior by removal of residual soln. using a pipe which is introduced into the bottles and which is provided with a blast nozzle.
