Hydrocarbon wax coatings are coated on at least one surface of a substrate by contacting the hydrocarbon polymer of at least one a -olefine containing at least 3 carbon atoms and having a density of between 0,83 and 0,94, an inherent viscosity of between 0,05 and 0,55 in tetralin at 145 DEG C., a melt viscosity of between 500 and 50,000 cp. at 190 DEG C. and a melting point between 45 DEG C. and 350 DEG C., in the molten state, with the substrate and chilling the molten polymer at a temperature below its melting point, e.g. by chill roll or water, the contacting and chilling being effected substantially simultaneously. The coating is nonpermeable for at least 30 seconds by acetone placed on a crease formed in the coating by folding the coated substrate and pressing it with a 5 pound weight. Substrates referred to are paper, foil e.g. metal foil, glass, fabric and wood. The polymer may be a homopolymer of an a -olefin containing 3-10 carbon atoms of formula CH2=CH-R wherein R is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, alkyl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical e.g. propene, butene, isobutene, 3-methyl-1-butene, pentene, decene, styrene, butodiene and hexadiene. The polymer may be a copolymer containing at least 50% of an a -olefin containing at least 3 carbon atoms e.g. 3-10 carbon atoms, with 10-20% ethylene, or with hexene or 3-methylbutene-1.
|
