A process wherein flat boundary surfaces of profiled core strips 60 are engaged with a first covering web 51-52, core strips, and free surfaces of said profiled core strips and of the covering web are covered with a second covering 81-82, is characterised in that core strips having the desired core profile are placed on the first covering web at spaced apart locations and preferably so as to be parallel to each other, loops of the second covering web are introduced into the spaces between the core strips so as to conform to said spaces and to cover mutually opposite boundary surfaces of the core strips and preferably also free boundary surfaces of the first covering web, and said first and second covering webs are joined to said core strips on mutually contacting surfaces. As shown, the loops are formed by ribs 71 on a conveyor 70 as the gap between the strips widens on passage around the pulley 25; in an alternative apparatus a retractable finger forms loops in a vertically moving web. Parts of the apparatus may actuate needles for needling fibrous layers contained in the covering webs. <IMAGE> |
