Rotating machine having non-magnetic sheath - extending from massive end block along curved surface of stator into air gap

The rotating machine has a sheath (4) extending into the air gap between rotor and stator and resting flush against the inner curved surface of the stator. The sheath is soldered at one end to a flange projecting from one end of the stator assembly. The other end of the sheath is integral with a massive block (6) fitting into the opposite end of the stator assembly. The other end of the sheath is integral with a massive block (6) fitting into the opposite end of the stator assembly. The massive block holds the bearings(9) for one end of the machine's shaft. The sheath and block are made of non-magnetic material (e.g. copper or a copper alloy). Alternatively, the sheath may extend at its non-block end into a flange fitted to the machine's casing.
