The switching dial has slots for inserting riders which operate a switch as the dial rotates driven by a timing mechanism. Each rider can be inserted into a slot in two positions orthogonal to one another. In one position the rider presents a broad face to the arm that operates the switch producing a long switching pulse and in the other position presents a narrow face to the arm (short pulse). The rider may be rectangular and the slots in the dial may be L-shaped, or the rider may be l-shaped and the slots in the dial square.
