Web sections (1) which come to lie one above the other in the free edge region can, due to friction, carry electrical charges of the same polarity and, due to mutual repulsion, can disturb further processing and, for example, fold over. The mutual repulsion can be eliminated by discharging (6); nevertheless the free edge regions can tend to flutter, wrinkle and fold over. Now, the free longitudinal edge regions, facing one another, of the web sections (1) coming to lie one above the other are electrically charged but with opposite polarity, so that the longitudinal edge regions adhere to one another. These charges can be applied intermittently along the longitudinal edges, so that adhesion points (9) are provided which are disposed with spacing from one another and expediently at the points of the web section ends. The charging can take place by means of web deflector rolls (2, 3) bearing electrodes which serve to charge section by section. <IMAGE>
