The barrel of a screw extruder is provided with intersecting bores having replaceable wearresistant linings 1, 1<SP>1</SP> held in position by ridge members 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. These members are movable by means of adjusting screws 4, 4<SP>1</SP> to apply pressure to the linings via surfaces 5 and are made of, or faced with, wear-resistant material such as hard metal.
