The filter medium closed at its bottom end is composed of two cloths (18, 20), lying one over the other, made of plastic, natural fibre or metal. The interior of the filter material is packed with loose filler material (10). In the area (c-d) of the attachment of the filter element to the connecting piece (11), the connecting piece (11) and the inner cloth (20) are furnished with through holes (23). The outer cloth (18) is impermeable in this area (c-d). During the filtration, the two cloths (18, 20) lie tightly against each other (Fig. 2), during the backwashing process, flushing medium flows through the orifices (23) into a chamber (24, Fig. 1) between the two cloths. As a result of the flushing medium rupture, the filter cake is uniformly and simultaneously detached from the filter element. <IMAGE>
