Eddies in centrifugal pumps and compressors can be eliminated by fitting nozzles (10, 11) to the volute casing (1). These nozzles direct a stream of air or fluid tangentially to the volute outer surface at a velocity which corresponds to the velocity which the air or fluid should achieve with true irrotational flow - i.e. without any eddies being formed. The nozzles extend over the full width of the volute casing.
