A firmly adhering silver and/or copper layer is applied to less noble metals by dipping the less noble metal into a salt melt containing at least one silver or copper salt at a temperature above 250 DEG C. Preferably the salt melt contains silver or copper halides and may also contain alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides. The process allows firmly adhering silver and copper coatings to be applied to less noble metals having a tendency to form a passivating oxide layer. In the process passivation of the metals to be coated is not troublesome or is eliminated.
