Benzoic acid is heated with a compound, especially an oxide, of a metal capable of existing in two valency states and oxygen under conditions such that a metal benzoate is formed but substantially no phenyl benzoate. Benzoyl salicylic acid and/or phenyl benzoate are made from this by heating in the absence of oxidising agent and water. Phenol may be obtained from phenyl benzoate by hydrolysis. The metal is preferably copper. |
