A process for the treatment of liquid effluent from cattle and pigs which comprises successively adding a coagulant and a flocculant followed by a separation of solid matter is described which results in the production of a solid waste suitable for use as a fertilizer and a fluid discharge having a biological oxygen demand of less than 4000 mg/l. The process may optionally comprise an aerobic biological treatment stage.
