<p>A wick for candles and similar purposes consists of woven threads. The number of warp ends is between 6 and 44, whilst the density of the weft is between 6 and 20 per cm. The warp consists of bleached cotton with a count of 12S-14S-16S or 18S. The weft is cotton thread of 242 or 362. A binding thead may be used formed from synthetic fibres. Weaving gives the advantage over braiding that the warp threads run the straight and come directly into contact with the molten wax. The maximal capillarity is obtd. and can be determined with the greatest accuracy for each thread. The attitude of the wick can be determined by the weft and the motion of the warp relatively to it. A synthetic binding thread contracts under heat more than cotton the direction of curvature of the wick tip thus remaining constant. The carbonising point of the wick is higher. The curved over end is shorter and the heat generated off centre has no effect. The number of threads used in the woven wick can be reduced considerably compared to braided wicks for candles of the same sizes, and a flame is ensured which does not smoke or overheat and cause the collapse of the candle.</p> |
