A method of ultrasonic testing the standpipe regions of the top or bottom closures of a reactor pressure vessel consists of causing the angle test head to revolve at constant radius (r), esp. about the standpipe axis, and simultaneously to rotate in the squint angle range about the perpendicular to the test region. Pref., a constant squint angle is maintained during the revolution of the test head about the standpipe axis; alternatively, an oscillating squint angle movement is maintained during the revolution. Used for obtaining as near as possible 100% ultrasonic testing of the weld and standpipe regions at op and bottom vessel closures, throughout the thickness and at varying angles. By using the change of squint angle, the amount of dead area adjacent to the standpipe which is not surveyed by the ultrasonic test heat is considerably reduced, typically to the volume of a small cone around the standpipe.
|
