An attachment adapted to be mounted on the rotary table 1 of a gear hobbing machine for holding a bevel gear blank P in adjustable angular relation to the hobbing tool 0, i.e. so that bevel gears may be cut or ground by the machine, comprises a plate 2 and shaft 5 adapted to be fixed to the table 1 and to rotate therewith, the shaft 5 supporting and driving a first bevel gear 9. A housing 6 rotatably mounted on the plate 2 and arranged to be held stationary by adjustable arm means 43, 44, 45 fixed to a stationary part of the machine carries, on an axis at right angles to that of the gear 9, a second bevel gear 16 in mesh therewith. The housing 6 also carries an angularly adjustable support comprising plates 21 ... 24 adjustable about the same axis as that of gear 16 and of a trunnion 20, the support carrying a work spindle 35 and mounted thereon a third bevel gear 38 at right angles to and in mesh with the second bevel gear 16. Thus drive to the gear blank P is taken through gears 9, 16, 38 (which are of equal numbers of teeth) so that the blank rotates at the same speed as the table. A locking pin 30 insertable into any of a series of sleeved holes 32 in the housing 6 and locking nuts and bolts (33, Fig. 1, not shown) fix the support and spindle in selected angular position. Gears 9 and 38 are adjustable on shaft 5 and spindle 35 respectively to eliminate backlash. |
