The amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in tobacco smoke, which are responsible for the biological effect of the smoke, can be considerably decreased by simultaneous addition of finely divided palladium or palladium salt and of calcium nitrate, magnesium nitrate or zinc nitrate to the smoking tobacco. Based on the weight of the tobacco, the amount of the palladium or palladium salt is 0.001 to 1% by weight, preferably 0.01 to 0.1% by weight, and the amount of the nitrate, calculated as nitrate nitrogen, is 0.25 to 0.75% by weight, preferably 0.25 to 0.6% by weight. |
