When a long splice is made between two multi-strand wire ropes, each strand of which contains a multiplicity of individual wires, two respective strands located in the splicing region are crossed and the strand ends extending in opposite directions are worked into the middle of the wire rope instead of the core which is removed there. In order to keep the outside diameter at the locations of the rope knots at most 5% larger than the rope diameter, the strands to be exchanged are loosened by untwisting and the wires of the loosened strands are combined in the crossing region, by interlacing and twisting, to form a single strand.
