The collet for a milling and drilling machine has a clamp fitted in a sleeve. This clamp is screwed at its lower end into a socket. There is an operating mechanism for application of a clamping pressure on to the socket. The clamping socket works in conjuction with a pressure plate or may form a part of it. The plate is displaceable in the direction of the clamp, and is formed as a pressure nut, adjustable along the clamp.
