PURPOSE:To prevent specially semi-selective picture elements from malfunctioning by applying an operating voltage to selective picture elements after changing a malfunction-preventive voltage in semi-selective picture elements previously. CONSTITUTION:During a write-driving period, malfunction-preventive voltage Vpis supplied to switch S1, all of data switches Sxand all of picture elements of write desired scanning electrode Yj. Next, only Sxi of data electrode Xi including picture element (ij) and Syj of Yj are turned ON, others are OFF, and S1 is OFF to apply write voltage Vw to picture element (ij), thereby causing picture element (ij) to luminescent. With all of switches OFF and S4 ON, charges of the picture element are discharged. The electric equivalent circuit can be expressed by capacities C1 to C4 and when C1 and C2 are charged at Vp, Vp and Vw-Vp are selected below the luminescence threshold level and erasing threshold level of the EL element, thereby preventing semi-selective picture elements (C2, C4) from malfunctioning. |
