N-phosphonomethyl glycine (I) was produced by the acid hydrolysis of N-t-butyl-N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine(II; R = hydrogen or organo group having C1-18). I is useful as a post-emergent broad spectrum herbicide (no data). Thus, compd. II and halogen acid (conc. 20wt%) such as hydrochloric acid or hydrobromic acid, was cyclized at 120≦̸C for 3 hr, filtrated, and dried to give white crystals of pure I.
