Safety device for pedestrian-controlled vibrating roller - uses ratchet to reduce operative force on lever-cam mechanism which returns motion-control lever to neutral position

The safety mechanism is incorporated on the handle-bar (6) of a vibrating roller, and automatically brings the roller to a halt when the operator releases his grip. The lever pivots fore and aft of a vertical neutral position to effect forward and reverse motion respectively, a roller (17) being mounted on an axial projection beyond its fulcrum (9). A 'V' notch (23) in a pivotable recoil-sprung (21) plate (20) normally engages the roller to lock the lever in the neutral position the plate being pivoted by a lever (19) to authorise use of lever (12). The operator must hold lever (19) pivoted against the spring, a ratchet mechanism (25, 27) acting on the plate to reduce the grip necessary.
