Title compds. (I; X and Y were H or lower alkyl, z was H, OH or lower alkoxy), which is the starting material for manufg. N-(Phosphonomethyl) glycine(IV), which is useful as post-emergence herbicides, were prepd. by condensation of glyoxal or glyoxylic acid esters(III) with aminomethyl phosphonic acid esters(II). I manufd. by reaction of II with aldehyde III, was hydrogenized at reaction temp. to give IV.
